Ranariddh back Prince Norodom Ranariddh arrived back home in Cambodia after receiving a royal pardon for his fraud conviction. Ranariddh, who has been living in Malaysia, was pardoned by his half-brother King Norodom Sihamoni after being sentenced in absentia last year to 18 months in jail for a RM12.2mil illegal property scheme.
MONDAY Second ship freed The second hijacked Malaysia tanker, the Bunga Melati Dua, was freed with all the crew safe. Two days earlier, the Bunga Melati Lima was released by Somali pirates who had kept both ships for more than a month. Sources said RM6.85mil was paid as ransom for each of the tankers.
TUESDAY Aidilfitri festivities Aidilfitri festivities marking the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan was celebrated in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya and Jordan. In other places including Malaysia, it was celebrated on Wednesday and Thursday.
14 killed A barter trade boat bound for Indonesia and believed to be illegally ferrying some 140 people capsized about four nautical miles from Westport, Port Klang, killing at least 14 passengers. Police said most of the passengers were on their way to Indonesia to celebrate Hari Raya.
Jeyeretnam dies Singapore veteran opposition politician, J.B. Jeyaretnam, 82, died of heart failure in a local hospital with his family by his side. An acerbic critic of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP), Jeyaretnam was repeatedly sued by senior PAP members over his 37-year career for making comments the PAP said were libellous.
Killer stampede At least 149 people were killed and scores injured in a frenzied stampede at the Chamunda Devi temple in the hilltop Mehrangarh Fort in Rajasthan. Officials said the stampede appeared to have started when a wall along the narrow path leading up to the temple collapsed, killing several people and sparking widespread panic.
WEDNESDAY Boy kills animals
A seven-year-old boy broke into the Alice Springs Reptile Centre in central Australia and went on a 30-minute killing spree. He used a rock to slay three lizards, including the zoo's beloved 20-year-old goanna, which he then fed to 'Terry', a 3.3m, 200kg saltwater crocodile. *GOANNA is the name used to refer to any number of Australian monitor lizards of the genus Varanus, as well as to certain species from Southeast Asia. Bizzare killing A couple who went to a relative's house for Hari Raya and agreed to an "alternative treatment" to rid them of their problems ended up dead after being battered with helmest and broomsticks. Five others who participated in the ritual, including the couple's children and relatives, suffered head injuries and were treatedd at the Kuala Lumpur hospital.
THURSDAY Lawsuit against Sanlu The parents of a baby allegedly sickened in China's tainted milk crisis sued one of the country's biggest dairies, Sanlu, in the first known lawsuit stemming from the scandal. Four infants have died and more than 50,000 have become ill after drinking the contaminated formula, which has linked to kidney stones.
FRIDAY Government sued A lorry driver sued the Government and two others for more than RM1mil in damages over the death of his son, a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) trainee, last year. K.Kannan claimed there was contradictory evidence over the cause of death of his son Yogeswaran, 21, and RMAF Special Forces (Paskau) cadet who was undergoing training at the Bukit Jugra camp in Banting.
Bailout Bill passed The US House of Representatives passed a US$700bil financial industry bailout Bill, blowing to intense pressure to help avert a global economic meltdown. The house, which sparked market and political turmoil by rejecting an earlier version of the bailout on Monday by 228 votes to 205, voted 263 in favour to 171 against in the largest US government economic intervention since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
